We have a classic case of the difference between US and European media today.
BBC News Onlne has this sad headline on their front page today: Israelis 'shoot dead Palestinian'
Note that it assigns responsibility for the death of a Palestinian to the Israelis.
CNN.com and CBSNews.com have no headline referring to the Israeli/Palestinian situation today.
FOXNews.com, ABCNews.com, and MSNBC.com all have headlines that note the scheduling of a summit between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Israeli PM, Ariel Sharon.
FOX's story mentions the "fragility" of the cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians near the end of the article. But the killing of 4 Palestinians by Israelis in the last week is not the reason for that fragility -- the election "victory by the Islamic militiant group Hamas in Gaza" is the reason. Fox does not give context here: Hamas won many local elections as a reaction to continued Israeli violence in Gaza.
The final two paragraphs of MSNBC's story mention the death of a Palestinian today, but the wording does not assign blame to Israeli troops. Moreover, the story insists that "violence has fallen sharply in recent weeks." This is true only if you are an Israeli. For Palestinians, violence has continued steadily, as we have seen.
ABC's story makes no mention of the death of a Palestinian at the hands of Israeli troops today.
So, once again, the international press notes in the headline that Israelis killed a Palestinian, tragically, today. But the US newsmedia barely reports the death (only MSNBC does), instead saying that "violence has fallen sharply." Again, if Israelis had been killed today, I suspect we'd see headlines in the US media reporting that as a major setback to peace efforts.
This is now the fifth time we've seen international media report the death of a Palestinian by Israelis and while the US media have ignored it (not in the headlines).
We have yet to notice a time when an Israeli has been killed by Palestinians and that story has not appeared in the US newsmedia websites that we monitor.
Headline tally unchanged at 2-2, photo tally the same at 3-2.
See the bias project description.
UPDATE: 1:54pm
CBS and ABCnews.com are carrying an AP report about a terrifying shooting between two rival Palestinian political factions today. Neither story mentions the shooting of a Palestinian man at the hands of Israeli soldiers earlier today in Gaza.
