The Most Important Blog... Ever

Another tragic story covered by AFP and Ha'aretz. Apparently, a 10 year old Palestinian girl in the Gaza Strip was killed yesterday. The Israeli Army insists that Palestinian gunfire caused the death, but Palestinians of course deny this. Hamas began firing at Israeli settlements in retaliation.

The AFP photo shows an all-too-common image that rarely can be seen in the US -- a Palestinian mother, grieving.

The headline of the AFP report, " Palestinians prepare to take control in West Bank, Hamas shells settlements," doesn't mention the killing of the young girl, so the global media doesn't cover this tragedy at the level that this project looks for.

UPDATE: 4:55PM -- BBC News Online has a headline on their front page, "Death Strains Informal Gaza Truce" that refers to the killing of ten-year-old Nuran Deeb while she was in her UN-administered school.

None of the US media we monitor (see the project description) has a headline about this death.

Because this story has made headlines in the world press but not in the US press, it counts in our tally. This is the sixth time a Palestinian has been killed by Israelis and the US media that we monitor do not have a headline about it. Again, I contend that if a 10 year old Israeli schoolgirl had been killed by Palestinians, we would see headlines in newsmedia around the world, including in the US. This double-standard is a significant reason, I argue, that Palestinians are dehumanized in the West. More on that later. For now, note that we have yet to notice a story about an Israeli being killed by Palestinians that didn't make headlines in at least one of the US newsmedia outlets that we monitor.

Overall headline tally unchanged at 2-2, photo tally unchanged at 3-2. (the image in this post is from AFP and not from one of our monitored sites). See the project description for more explanation.
