Hillary Clinton obviously read the post here on The Most Important Blog... Ever about abortion, because she just took my strategy and ran with it. Here's me last November:
And yesterday, Hillary said basically the same thing.
Too bad she's going to lose in the 2008 primaries anyway. Right?
If we want to have any chance of stopping the movement to illegalize abortion, we’re gonna have to accept that abortion is a bad thing. I’m willing to agree that abortion is murder, if that’s what it takes. I think that is what it takes. Liberals need to do more than accept that abortion is bad – we have to start talking about the fact that it’s bad, and then change the debate. Making abortion illegal won’t help reduce abortions. Improving sex education will help. Universal health care will help. Publicly funded childcare and after school programs would help. These issues are linked, and that’s really what the debate needs to be about.
If we want to keep abortion legal, we need to reframe the debate. It’s not about when life begins, and it’s not about feminist theory. It’s about talking to people and convincing them that because we agree that abortion is bad, we need to do everything we can to minimize the number of abortions that happen. Making abortion illegal wouldn’t help anybody, and it would hurt women in terrible ways.
And yesterday, Hillary said basically the same thing.
Abortion is "a sad, even tragic choice to many, many women," said Clinton. Then she went further: "There is no reason why government cannot do more to educate and inform and provide assistance so that the choice guaranteed under our constitution either does not ever have to be exercised or only in very rare circumstances."
Too bad she's going to lose in the 2008 primaries anyway. Right?
