I don't have much to say except this sucks. This happened not too far from my old stomping grounds, near Osaka in the Kansai region. Those trains are amazing and always seemed extremely safe to me, except for the occasional (and increasingly frequent) "human accidents," which happened when suicidal people would jump in front of the train. This story from last night really bummed me out, and I can only imagine how the kid who was driving the thing feels.
Correction: Kyodo and Mainichi news agencies are reporting that the 23 year old driver is buried in the train wreckage, critically wounded. Sorry for repeating the assertion made by nearly all other news agencies (BBC, CNN, Reuters, AP and others) that the driver survived and was being questioned by police. In fact, the train's conductor has been questioned. What a horrible story. Just when things were looking up for Japan.
