The Most Important Blog... Ever

Terrible news from Israel and Palestine today as at least 4 people are dead in a surge of violence. BBC is reporting that three Israelis -- one a young child -- were killed near an illegal settlement in the West Bank by Palestinian gunmen. And in a seperate incident, Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian militant near Jenin in the northern West Bank.

The US media has picked up on these tragic stories, with three front-page headlines on the websites that we monitor.

CBSNews: Violence Erupts In West Bank
FOXNews:Attack Kills Three Israelis in West Bank
MSNBC: Palestinian gunmen kill 3 Israelis in West Bank

CNN, ABCNews, and the NYTimes do not have headlines at this time about this story.* We'll continue to monitor in case of updates.

The CBSheadline does not directly attribute blame for the tragic shooting deaths to either party and does not specify the origins of the dead people, so it doesn't count in our tallies. The FOX headline notes that Israelis were killed but doesn't assign blame to Palestinians, so it counts as the first in our tally of this kind of headline. The MSNBC headline does directly attribute the killing of Israelis to Palestinian gunmen, and this counts as the third time that we've noticed a headline assigning blame to Palestinians in this manner since January.

Here are the images accompanying to the stories:

From MSNBC:

This image counts in our tally of Israelis suffering or grieving as a result of Palestinian violence.

From CBSNews:

Caption: "Israeli soldiers climb on the roof of a building in the West Bank Sunday. Two Palestinian militants were arrested and several weapons were confiscated during the military operation in the village." (AP)

This image counts in our tally of Israelis with guns.

Tallies updated. Thanks to Dave for the early tip on these stories. We'll continue to monitor the US sites for updates. Full project details here.

*UPDATE: 2:48pm

CNN:
Three Israelis die in West Bank shooting
This headline is the 2nd we've noticed that reports Israelis being tragically, violently killed but does not attribute the blame directly to Palestinians.

This image counts in our tally of images showing Israelis suffering as a result of Palestinian violence.

*UPDATE: 3:55PM

New York Times: 3 Israelis and Militant Are Killed in West Bank

This headline counts as the third today in our tally of headlines that report Israeli deaths but do not assign blame. No images in the story.

Now all of the websites we monitor have a headline about this story on their front page except one (ABCNews). Note that had three Palestinians been shot dead today, there likely would have been no headlines about it on any of the websites we monitor. Just last month, we had exactly that scenario. Another day in which three Palestinians were tragically killed was February 15, and on that day as well, none of the sites we monitored had a headline about it. Indeed, we've noted 26 separate incidents involving Palestinian deaths that were reported in other press but ignored by the US websites that we monitor. However, when Israelis are tragically killed, as was the case today, the US press seems to take note. More on this as the project continues.
