Quote of the Week

The Palestinian struggle can be seen as following American principles of fighting for freedom and self-determination.  Just as the first Americans revolted against an oppressive military occupation, so too are the Palestinians trying to get out from under the 35 year occupation of their lives by the Israelis.  Sadly, because of the Israeli media spin, this perspective is seen as "radical" or even insulting to many Americans.  This week's (June 3) article excellently articulates the idea that the Palestinian and American ideologies are not so far apart:

The Palestinians are doing what any American citizen would do: We are fighting for our rights. At times, some Palestinian individuals and organizations reach a point of equating life under Israeli occupation to death and unfortunately choose to take Israeli civilian lives along with their own. This is a sad but bitter reality of the environment that a prolonged foreign military occupation creates.

If you are interested in introductory information, I have two articles.  The first is my own, which gives some history and continues up to the start of the current round of violence in the region.

The second introductory article, What Americans Need to Know to Understand Palestinian Rage, is the most important piece that I have read on the situation.  It was written by an American Jew who toured the West Bank and Gaza Strip to talk with Palestinians.  His observations are insightful and powerful.  The article was published in September 2000, but unfortunately it was communicated by email, and I do not have any citation information other than the author's name: Eduardo Cohen.  Here's a quote:

"I sensed some of the frustration and anger that Palestinians feel when I spoke with a typical Palestinian farmer in the West Bank whose well of precious water, which he needed to irrigate his crops, had been confiscated by Israeli authorities so a nearby Jewish settlement could fill its swimming pools and water its green lawns."

While the conflict in the Middle East is very often front-page and top-headline news, every news organization and indeed every individual reporter are not the same.  Some are decidedly pro-Israeli, some decidedly pro-Palestinian.  I find that the best option is to seek out as many different sources of information as you can, and then decide for yourself what to believe.  Here are some places I've found to have interesting and important information.

General News

BBC News
Ha'aretz
(an Israeli daily newspaper)
Arabia.com
The New York Times
The Jerusalem Post

Detailed Background Information and Opinions

bitterlemons.org
One of the most balanced information sources on the net.  This site gives 4 essays weekly, 2 from Israelis and 2 from Palestinians.  Also has a library of important documents (governmental and otherwise) about the conflict.

Globalissues.org
Lots of information here.  Documents and historical overviews.  Good for an introduction and also for more in-depth historical research.
BBC News In Depth Report: Israel and the Palestinians

Non-Governmental Organization Websites

B'tselem

September 11 and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Why did I see Palestinians celebrating on September 11?

Please take a moment to read this very important article.  Here's a small excerpt:

"The Palestinians in the footage were mostly young children. Most of their behaviour in the footage appeared to be no different from how Palestinian children always behave when foreign journalists turn up in their towns, crowding and smiling at the camera and giving the victory sign that has been a symbol of Palestinian steadfastness under Israeli military occupation since the first Intifada in 1987. There is not a single reporter with any experience of carrying a camera into the Palestinian West Bank under any circumstance who couldn't get similar footage on any day they visited the occupied territories."

This article is published by the Electronic Intifada, an international media-watching organization that comments on the situation in the Middle East.  It discusses the misuse of the footage of celebrating Palestinians, seen by just about every American watching the news on that horrible day.

Why would Palestinians celebrate?  Are they ALL evil?  For some important insights, please read this article.
