The Pyramids at Giza Photo Album

In June 2004 I was in Cairo to study Arabic.  The American University in Cairo took us on an amazing tour of the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World, the Pyramids at Giza.  These pyramids were already 2400 years old when Jesus was born.  How about that.  Enjoy the photos.  Click here to see more of Cairo and Egypt.

Erik and the Pyramids

Erik and the three pyramids, Khufu (The Great Pyramid), Khafre, and Menkaure (L to R).

In the cove

Here I am climbing around the Great Pyramid, which was built nearly 4600 years ago.

Camel Cop

Here a tourist policeman on camelback guards the Pyramid of Khafre, which still has some of its original coating near the top.  The other pyramids' limestone coating has been lost.

Looking Up

Looking up from the base of the Great Pyramid.

Entrance

The entrance on the north wall of the Great Pyramid.  The people standing there give you a sense of the scale of this enormous building.  This pyramid held the record as the tallest building in the world until the construction of the Eiffel Tower.

The Edge

The northeast edge of the Great Pyramid

The Sphinx and its pyramid.  Some Egyptologists suggest that each pyramid has a sphinx, but the other two are either buried or lost.
