Hiroshima Photo Album

I took a trip to Hiroshima in November of 2001, and it has been one of the most interesting and humbling adventures I've ever been on.  Just two quick days in this large metropolis were enough to bring home the emotion of the event that defines it: the horrible bombing in the summer of 1945.

There is more to Hiroshima than just the memories of the bombing, however.  Hiroshima today is a vibrant city, complete with its own form of my favorite Japanese down-home meal: okonomiyaki.  Hiroshima also boasts one of the "three most beautiful sights in Japan," the torii in the Water on the island of Miyajima.

As always, if you have questions, comments, or want a better scan of any photo, please just email me.  erik@eriklove.com

The A-Bomb Dome.

Almost new at the time of the bombing, this building's shell remains as a memorial to the destruction that ravaged the entire city.  This was the largest of about 5 concrete buildings to partially survive the bomb.

The official register of victims, updated annually to include new victims of cancers caused by the bomb's radiation, lies under this arch.  The Dome can be seen in the background, as can part of the modern skyline of the city.

The clock at the Peace Museum.  It shows the number of days since the bombing, and the number of days since the most recent nuclear weapons test.  It had been 45 days since the US carried out just such a test in Nevada when I visited.
