Jordan Photo Album

Jordan is a desert country in the center of the Middle East, bordering Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Israel, and The West Bank.  Most of the country is a vast, mountainous desert.  After arriving by boat from Egypt into Aqaba, I camped in the desert near Wadi Rum, which is a small Bedouin village in the southwest.  Then, I spent two nights in Petra, the famous city carved into the sides of mountains.  After a night in Amman, I set off for Jerusalem via the King Hussein bridge over the Jordan River.

After arriving, we set off for Wadi Rum, and found this small Bedouin village in the middle of a vast desert.  We met our gracious guide and his family here.

We traveled around the desert in this classic Toyota 4x4.

That's me climbing what looked like a Martian sand dune.  Amazing view from up there.  Too bad I didn't have my camera.

This was our campsite at Wadi Rum, where we spent a night before heading for Petra.

And here is Petra.  We walked down this long cavern for about 15 minutes...

And then, suddenly, this came into view.

The first building you see in Petra, carved into the mountainside, is the ancient treasury.  These were carved some 2000 years ago.  Click for more on the history of this amazing place.

I'm on the left, standing at the base of the treasury.  Amazingly, we were allowed up to the entrance (but not inside).

The city continues for several kilometers.  Click on the photo to see buildings carved into the mountain.

Quite a view from the High Point of Sacrifice, well worth the hour of climbing.
